Screen resolution is the number of pixels horizontally and vertically. The more pixels, the sharper and more detailed the image. A resolution of 1920x1080 means 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall.

For office work, Full HD (1920x1080) is sufficient
For design and photography — at least 2K (2560x1440)
For video editing — 4K (3840x2160)
For gaming — depends on the graphics card
