Fractions are one of the topics where the most mistakes are made. Follow these tips for accurate calculations.
The most common mistake: 1/2 + 1/3 ≠ 2/5. Correct approach: find a common denominator and convert both fractions to it.
Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by the reciprocal. a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c. Don't forget to flip the divisor specifically.
When multiplying fractions, first cross-cancel. This simplifies the calculations and keeps the numbers smaller.
Before performing operations, convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. You can convert back after the calculations.
For multiplication and division: same signs give positive, different signs give negative. Count the number of negative factors.
Convert fractions to decimals and verify the result with an approximate calculation. If 2/3 ≈ 0.67 and 1/4 = 0.25, then the sum ≈ 0.92.
The denominator of a fraction cannot equal zero. In algebraic expressions, always check this condition.
