Don't overload your photos with effects. Light adjustments to brightness and contrast are usually sufficient.
If the filter seems to be applied correctly, reduce its intensity by 20%. This will create a more natural result.
Before applying art filters, make sure that the white color is truly white. This is the basis of processing.
Different shooting conditions require different processing. A cloudy day and bright sun need the opposite correction.
Periodically compare the processed photo with the original one. The eye gets used to changes, and you can overdo it.
Photos for print are processed differently than for screen. Monitors and paper render colors differently.
